A Literacy Crater

  1. 98% literacy with complex texts in Massachusetts in 1850,
  2. Only 31% of college graduates could read & draw inferences from a long complicated text in 2003 (U.S. Dept. of Education),
  3. 29% decrease between 1993 and 2003 with respect to point number 2 above,
  4. Nearly 80% of NYC public H.S. graduates who enrolled in CUNY community college had to relearn basic reading, writing or math.
